Academic-integrity resources
I take academic integrity very seriously. As part of my continuing professional development, I keep up to date with changing policies and opinions among editorial professionals and universities and regularly review the services that I offer concerning student work.
Listed below are several of my learning sources; these may be of interest to students and fellow editorial professionals too.

- I have studied the "How to Recognize Plagiarism" tutorial site and passed an adaptive certification test (Master's and doctoral level) offered by Indiana University Bloomington (USA)
- I have completed the FutureLearn "Academic Integrity: Values, skills, action" self-study course from the University of Auckland, New Zealand (my statement of participation is viewable here)
- I follow the guidance of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP)'s Theses and Dissertations: Checking the language guide
“Joanna ... did an excellent job. She was extremely thorough, not only in the basic proof-reading of the content, but in suggesting changes for clarity and consistency. She checked all the references, for instance pointing out where a referenced document had been replaced by another. I would certainly recommend her to anyone who needs someone to carry out a highly professional proof-reading project.”

What is copy-editing?
The CIEP's 'What is copy-editing?' page provides a useful overview of copy-editing.
A good copy-editor can have a significant positive impact on a project's schedule and budget by helping to avoid problems and unnecessary expense at later publication stages.

Copy-editing:
- is done on in-progress, non-final material – further development of the material should be expected after copy-editing
- usually occurs when a document is still in an electronic format, typically as a Word file, and before the final layout and appearance of the material is known
- usually produces several queries that need to be addressed by the author, often resulting in changes to the words, organisation and length of the document
- primarily concerns the content of a document – improving how the text reads and instructing how the content should be styled and structured
- is the stage at which a specific style is applied to the text (a specific house style or according to a style guide)
What is proofreading?
A proofreader is often the last person to look at a document in its entirety before publication, putting them in a unique position to positively affect your publication.
The CIEP's 'What is proofreading?' and 'Standards in proofreading' pages describe the proofreading process.

Proofreading:
- is done on almost-final material – only important and minimal changes should be expected after proofreading
- occurs when a document is in its final format, often as a PDF, and its final layout and appearance are set
- involves checking both the text and the style/appearance of a document
- is concerned with consistency – of spelling, language style and presentation format (often according to the house style or other chosen style)
Proof-editing
This is a very tailored approach involving elements of both copy-editing and proofreading, to best suit your project. It most often occurs on text in an electronic format and it can be particularly relevant for projects with tight deadlines.
Style-sheet development
A style sheet or house style is an asset to your project, whether it be a large document, one part of a series of published works, a website or a collection of materials specific to one topic.
A good style sheet can save you time, expense and frustration, by clearly stating – to you, your collaborators and your copy-editor and proofreader – the specifics of spelling, grammar, structure, style and formatting of your content. It is the key tool to help you produce a professional result.
