Joanna Miles | Copy-editor and proofreader

Pricing

Rates

I base my copy-editing and proofreading rates on the suggested minimum rates published by the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (or CIEP, formerly the Society for Editors and Proofreaders, SfEP).

Please note that the rate I quote you may be lower or higher than these suggested rates.

My rate for tech-editing is determined on a case-by-case basis, after we have discussed your project in detail.

I am happy to quote for work on a project based on a:
price per hour
price per 1000 words
fixed fee

As every project is different, I will always explore the exact nature of your project and your requirements before providing a quotation for my services. Please contact me to get things started.

Several factors determine how much is fair to charge, including:
  • complexity of the work – are there figures, tables, footnotes, references or extensive formatting?
  • length of the work
  • condition/quality of the work (for proofreading, has it already been copy-edited?)
  • condition of the accompanying documentation – is there a detailed brief or a requirement to determine the majority usage and style of a document?
  • scope of the work – will there be minimal changes, extensive changes or many queries to raise and respond to?
  • urgency of returning the completed work

There are certain things that I need to know before I can send you a quotation – please see Quotations below.
Pound sterling, lev and euro currency symbols
Other things to note are that:

  • My minimum fee for a single project is £25 (or £18, for students), excluding VAT

  • I offer a discount for work from students and charities, on a case-by-case basis

  • Work carried out over weekends and official holidays/non-working days may be charged at a higher rate – I will always discuss the exact rate with you in advance

Quotations

To allow me to give you an accurate quotation, please provide the following client and project information, and a sample of your text.

Client information
  • your name, and business/charity/institution name (as appropriate)
  • your correspondence address, telephone number and email address (and website, if applicable)
  • your location (country) and whether you are registered for VAT – I need to know this to determine whether to add VAT to your quotation
  • your preferred format of quotation: fixed fee, price per hour and/or price per 1000 words

Project information
  • word count (or a good estimate)
  • page count (or a good estimate) – preferably as the number of A4 pages
  • whether your project requires copy-editing or proofreading – please refer to Services to help determine your requirements
  • title and/or subject area/genre/specialism
  • format of the text – typically Word file and/or PDF
  • whether the text contains figures/images, tables, footnotes or references (and if so how many, or what proportion of the document), or extensive formatting e.g. italic, bold, subscript and superscript
  • whether there is a given style to follow (e.g. a style sheet or style guide, or other books that the project must match) or whether this is a stand-alone project
  • when you expect to provide the project files to me
  • your desired deadline and whether this deadline is fixed or flexible

Text sample
I will always need to see a representative sample of your project text.

For articles and books, an ideal sample would be consecutive pages from the middle of the text, amounting to at least 10% of the overall text.
N.B. The larger the sample that you are able to provide, the more accurate a quotation I can give!

VAT note
I am registered for VAT – please contact me to learn how this affects what appears on my invoices.
For VAT-registered EU-based clients and VAT-registered UK-based clients, my invoices carry a 0% VAT charge.

Payment options

Payment should be made within 30 days of receipt of my invoice to my UK or Bulgarian bank account in pounds sterling (GBP), euros (EUR) or Bulgarian levs (BGN).
